Can I install my new wheels myself or do I need a professional?

While some experienced enthusiasts choose to install their own wheels, professional installation is always recommended to ensure everything is torqued correctly and safely. If you do choose to install your wheels yourself, following proper test fitting procedures and torque specifications is essential before driving on them.

Once your new wheels and tires arrive, the excitement to get them on your vehicle is real. Whether you are considering a DIY installation or planning to take your vehicle to a shop, here is what you need to know to make sure the job gets done safely and correctly.

Professional Installation Is Always Recommended

While it is possible for experienced enthusiasts to install their own wheels, professional installation is always the recommended route. A qualified wheel and tire shop has the proper equipment to ensure your wheels are torqued to the correct vehicle specifications, your TPMS sensors are functioning properly, and everything is installed safely before you hit the road. The peace of mind that comes with a professional installation is well worth it, especially considering the safety implications of wheels that are not installed correctly.

If You Choose to Install Yourself

If you are experienced and comfortable with the process and choose to install your wheels yourself, there are several important steps to follow to ensure a safe and proper installation.

Always hand torque your lug nuts using hand tools rather than power tools. Using an impact gun or other power tools during installation can cause damage to the lugs and studs, which can create serious safety issues down the road. Power tools are not recommended at any point during the installation process.

Lug nuts should be tightened in a star pattern rather than going around the wheel in a circle. This ensures even seating of the wheel against the hub and helps prevent warping or uneven pressure on the mounting surface.

Once the lugs are hand tightened, use a torque wrench to bring them to the vehicle manufacturer's specified torque rating. Torque specifications can be found in your vehicle's owner's manual or by checking with your dealership. Under-torquing can allow wheels to loosen while driving, and over-torquing can damage studs or make future removal difficult.

Test Fitting Is a Required Step

Before completing your installation or driving on your new wheels, performing a full test fit is strongly recommended and an important part of the process. Test fitting involves hand tightening the lug nuts and checking for clearance around the brake calipers, inner valve stems, wheel weights, fenders, and suspension components before the vehicle's weight is fully on the wheels.

Once the vehicle is lowered onto the tires, turn the steering wheel fully in both directions to check for any rubbing or contact points. Keep in mind that suspension compresses while driving, which can change clearances compared to what you see during a static test fit. Any product that shows signs of being driven on cannot be returned, so completing the test fit before driving is a critical step.

What About TPMS?

If your wheel and tire package included TPMS sensors, those were installed before shipping. After installation, TPMS sensors typically sync up to your vehicle automatically after around 50 miles of driving. In some cases, manual syncing may be required. For this, a reputable wheel and tire shop with the proper aftermarket sensor reading equipment is recommended over a dealership, as dealerships do not always carry the tools needed to read aftermarket sensors.

Any Loss or Damage During Installation Is the Customer's Responsibility

It is important to be aware that any loss, labor fees, additional charges, or damages caused during installation or from installing incorrect items are the responsibility of the customer. This is another reason why taking your time, following proper procedures, and opting for professional installation when in doubt is always the safest approach.
