Why are my TPMS lights still on after installation?

A TPMS light is usually just a matter of syncing them to your vehicle. After about 50 miles of driving they should sync automatically, but a wheel or tire shop can manually program them if needed.

If your TPMS warning light is still on after installing your new wheels and tires, do not panic! This is a very common issue and is usually a quick fix.

What is TPMS? TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It is a small sensor inside your tire that monitors air pressure and alerts you on the dashboard if a tire is over or under inflated.

Why is the light still on? There are a few common reasons your TPMS light may still be on after installation:

  • Your new sensors may need time to sync with your vehicle
  • Your sensors may need to be manually programmed to communicate with your vehicle
  • Your tire pressure may be too low or too high and needs to be adjusted

What to do: TPMS sensors should automatically sync with your vehicle after about 50 miles of driving. If the light is still on after that, here are a few steps to take:

  • Check your tire pressure and inflate or deflate as needed to match your vehicle's recommended PSI
  • Visit a reputable wheel or tire shop equipped with the proper tools to manually sync your sensors. We do not recommend going to a dealership as they often do not have the equipment to read aftermarket sensors
  • If you need a replacement TPMS sensor, contact us and we will be happy to help

How do I know if TPMS sensors were installed? Check your valve stems! A black rubber valve stem with a gold valve under the cap indicates that TPMS sensors are installed. A chrome valve stem indicates there is no TPMS installed.
